NEW POLICY - FEBRUARY 2009

Pilot Mound Collegiate

Late/Incomplete Assignment Policy

Student Intervention Plan

In collaboration with Prairie Spirit School Division, the students and staff of Pilot Mound Collegiate have developed a plan aimed at assisting students in the completion of assignments that are late and/or incomplete and deemed essential by the teacher in order to complete an accurate assessment for each student.

When an essential assignment is deemed late or incomplete the following plan will be implemented:

A meeting will take place between the student and the teacher:

  1. a)      to discuss the reason(s) for the assignment being late or incomplete.
  2. b)      to determine/identify whether or not the student requires additional assistance in completing the assignment.
  3. c)      set a reasonable date (no longer than 7 calendar days) for the assignment to be completed and handed in.
  4. d)      to document meeting by completing the attached contract and deciding who needs to sign the contract.
  5. e)      contact the parents if it is decided that they need to sign the contract.

If the conditions of the contract are not met it is understood that the student will be accepting a “zero” on the assignment which could lead to the loss of the credit for the student.

Three contracts in any subject may result in loss of exemption or eligibility for extra-curricular activities.

EVALUATION POLICY

EXAMS:
In Pilot Mound Collegiate all students in S1-S4 will write a mid-term and final exam (unless exempt) in all core courses and any non-core courses as identified by the teacher. Students will be made aware of the non-core exams on the first day of classes in the affected semester.

All school examinations will be cumulative and constitute 30% of the student’s final grade. Final examinations will be 2-3 hours in length while mid-terms should be 1-2 hours in length.

A student who obtains less than 40% on a school developed final examination will receive this mark as his/her final mark and will not receive a credit for the course regardless of the term mark.

EXEMPTIONS:

Exemptions are a privilege and will be considered for any school developed final examination provided the student meets the following criteria:

¨ maintains an average of 78% in a course
¨ complete, to the best of his/her ability, all assignments, projects and tests prescribed by the subject teacher
¨ maintain a positive attitude towards learning, teachers and fellow students
¨ attend class regularly
¨ show respect for self, others and school property

HOMEWORK EXPECTATIONS

As a strong relationship exists between completion of homework and academic achievement, Pilot Mound Collegiate staff expects:

¨ students will complete assigned homework and hand in
assignments at the beginning of class on the due date
¨ material submitted after the deadline will receive a zero
unless an extension has been negotiated with the teacher
¨ all assignments must be completed to receive credit for a
course

¨ if a student is excused the day an assignment is given, the day
an assignment is due or the day a test is administered, the
student will hand in the assignment/write the test on the first
day of return to school unless alternate arrangements have
been negotiated with the teacher
¨ if a student misses a test because of skipping classes, he/she
will receive a mark of zero for that test
¨ a grade of zero will automatically be assigned for academic
dishonesty on an assignment, test or exam (i.e. cheating,
plagiarism, skipping a test) The student will be required to
complete the work to receive credit for the course.

WITHDRAWAL FROM COURSES

The deadline for changing courses(without penalty) will be one week after the beginning of each semester. Students may voluntarily withdraw from a course until midterm provided the necessary forms have been completed.
